the neighbour's cat is crying in the hallway. it's been crying in the hallway since I came home from work yesterday afternoon. Yes, more than fourteen hours ago, and god knows how long it was out there before that.
i banged on their door; no answer. i left it some water so it wouldn't dehydrate at least. at 1.30 this morning i called the spca because the poor thing sounded so pitiful i couldn't stand it any more; all i got was the answering service. i hung up when they put me on hold.
this morning, all was quiet. i'd dreamt of the poor damned cat (kitten, really) all night. I poked the door open to see if it still was there; it was. before calling the spca (oh dear, its cries are really breaking my heart... but probably not as much as its own heart has been broken. i could choke the neighbours), i called my landlord to find the neighbours' number. he said he was on his way into town and he had the key, so he'd let the cat in and he's pretty sure they leave food out for it.
so i know help is coming for the little dear, but it doesn't. i think i need to go out and hug it.
