Flu

Sunday, Kevin woke up and, as he put it, his "head exploded." Coughing and hacking and sneezing and coughing some more, he couldn't get it clear. By the afternoon, his forehead and cheeks were so hot I could have blistered my fingers checking on him. At first, I thought he had what I had been dealing with throughout vacation, only worse, so I stayed with him, without fearing I'd catch it. Oops.

By Monday, he was throwing up (eww, never mention it again) and achy and feverish and still coughing and hacking. I felt fine, however - well, no worse than I'd been for the past couple of weeks.

Shauna was sick, too; she called looking for someone to take care of her. So, I got my dad to take me to Kevin's where I picked up his car. Then I went to the grocery store, got bananas, apples, oranges and juice for both of them, dropped Kevin's stuff off to him, picked up a pile of movies and a pizza, and went to Shauna's.

Yesterday morning (was it really only yesterday? wow), I woke up achy and feverish. I got in the shower, but quickly realized there was no way I could make it into work. So I called in and went back to bed. My everything hurt, and I had an awful fever. I got my dad to bring me some neo-citron, and I went back to sleep. Actually, from monday night until I got up this morning, I slept 27 hours. And now that I think of it, I actually haven't eaten anything since Monday, either - well, I had a small fruit smoothie at lunch, and a co-worker brought me a teabiscuit this afternoon. I'm still not actually hungry. I didn't eat on Monday because I was terrified of the throwing up - I haven't done that in ten years, and I didn't plan to start now.

Anyway, Kevin was feeling a bit better yesterday afternoon, so he got his dad to take him to my place so he could take me to the walkin clinic (my doctor had a heart attack recently, plus she's in my hometown and I'm not; I'm going to have to find a new doctor, methinks). While I was there, I got an awful, awful chill. Shivering right through my bones. The doctor said Yup, that's the Flu alright, and prescribed three over-the-counter medicines (shmotrivin, shmadvil, and shmylenol cold & flu) and plenty of fluids and rest.

Well, by that time I couldn't handle the cold, and by the time Kevin got me to my driveway (approximately a 70-second drive) I was crying, I shivered and hurt that bad. Bless his little soul, he let me go to bed while he (still sick, mind you!) went to get my medicines.

It took five blankets, two pairs of socks, fluffy pants, a tshirt and sweater, a scarf, my winter hat and hot neo-citron to get me warm again. And then, of course, I got too warm. Gaaah.

Anyway, turns out that work decided they're not paying us for sick days anymore, so after 13 more hours of sleep, when I got up this morning I felt mostly better (probably due to the drugs), so I went in at lunchtime (with more drugs) for half a day. I can't afford to be losing $80/day. With the drugs it wasn't too bad. I just hope I didn't contaminate everyone else.

Before I left this morning, I was talking to Kev. He felt worse than ever, now coughing up blood, and the ache in his back had moved further upward, and aaack. Scary. He went back to his doctor, and after a couple of anxious hours of waiting on my part, he called and let me know that it's still just the flu, and they gave him a strong antibiotic, and that his lungs aren't any worse than they were; the blood was probably just from coughing his throat raw. Isn't that the saddest? I just want to hug him until he feels better. Plus, I kinda feel bad that he came out to take care of me when he was still sick.

But, I was just talking with him, and within 20 minutes of taking the new antibiotic, he was feeling better. Yay! Relief.

I gotta go hunt down some food.
